Touch-Up Paint Prep: 7 Steps for a Cleaner OEM Match
Surface preparation is what separates a rough touch-up from a clean repair. Follow these simple steps before applying PAINTHERA paint.
Even the best color match needs a clean surface. Prep work helps paint lay down evenly, bond correctly, and blend better with the surrounding panel.
1. Wash the area
Start with soap and water to remove road film, dust, and loose dirt. Dry the area completely before moving to the next step.
2. Remove wax and grease
Use a proper wax and grease remover. This helps prevent fisheyes, lifting, and weak adhesion.
3. Inspect the damage
Small chips, scratches, and scuffs each need a slightly different approach. If bare metal or plastic is exposed, primer or adhesion promoter may be required.
4. Sand carefully
Light sanding smooths sharp edges and gives the new coating something to grip. Avoid sanding far beyond the repair area.
5. Apply thin coats
Several light coats usually look better than one heavy coat. Let each coat flash according to product directions.
6. Use clear coat when needed
Most basecoat repairs need clear coat for gloss, UV protection, and durability, especially on metallic and pearl colors.
7. Let it cure
Give the repair enough time to harden before washing, polishing, or exposing it to harsh conditions.
Good preparation does not take long, but it makes a major difference in the final result.
